Today I am posting some pages from a December 1911 McCall's magazine. It has some great ads and some wonderful sketches of dresses. The cover art is a beautiful wreath with a girl.

I got a new scanner this week and my beloved old software program will not work with it. I am trying to find the right new software for scanning and repairing images. I also want to use it to make my digital stamps. If any of you have any suggestions on software to use on a MAC that doesn't cost too much I would appreciate it. In the meantime, please bear with me. I am not able to repair these images much as I like. Below are Christmas postcards from the early 1900's.

This week is Thanksgiving in the USA. Yesterday my daughter and I joined a group of my coworkers to pack up 150 turkey dinners for families who otherwise would not be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner. In less than an hour my coworkers and I had all the meals packed and on trucks. We had so much fun and we were able to help people too. In the spirit of Thanksgiving I challege of of you to do something this week to help someone else. Though this year has been a challenging one for my family I am always thankful for all the good things that come my way.

The images I am posting today are from a large sized french children's book from the 1920's called Pierrette. The artist is Zou Zou? I can't read the writing. I have included part of the cover but I can not fit even half the book in the scanner. Anyway the pictures are adorable. I love the clothing and the hairstyles.

I hope you are enjoying these images from The Woman's Institute Home Sewing Tips Booklet. One of the most interesting things about this booklet is the use of Post It like squares. This booklet is from 1925. The squares are similar in color to Post Its and the adhesive is on one edge. I am not sure if it is removable. I am afraid to damage the booklet.

A few more of the crepe paper costumes from the Dennison booklet. Wow they just get more and more intricate! It is hard for me to believe that people actually made these costumes. I love the 20's style.

These images are from the Dennison booklet from 1925 as well. I just love the the details. It is hard to believe that people made such intricate costumes out of crepe paper. The booklets include directions but the time involved for a disposable costume seems silly.

Exciting news! My 10 year old daughter has started a new blog called Learning From Our Past. It is a child's view of history. She has loved history since she was a little girl and now wants to share what she has learned with other children. At the flea market she collects old photos and ephemera of our U.S. Presidents and other famous people. Today we have Aunt Annie's family. She must be Bess's sister in law. These are not marked as well and I am trying to guess from previous photos who is who. The man with Annie in the fourth photo I assume is her husband and a Cohen. He looks a lot like the women in some of the previous Cohen photos and is marked New Haven CT like all of the Cohen photos. All the Turin photos are maked NYC 70-72 E 99th St was their address.

I still have many more photos but the flea market vendor I got these photos from has promised to bring me even more photos from the lot for no additional charge. There are travel photos to South America and other later family shots. Perhaps we will be able to piece together the identities of the mystery people from those photos.

Unknown Epstein - This looks like Syvia but the dates don't work. So either it is an old picture sent to Aunt Annie at a later date or another Epstein.

I have posted a few more of the vintage photos from 1910 -1914 I got at the flea market last week. They really are a treasure. I love this series showing Sylvia's parents who were very handsome and then Sylvia as she gets older. It makes me sad to think a family has lost this history so I have adopted them. Most of these photos and photo postcards were sent to an aunt Annie. Perhaps it went to a family member of Annie's when she died and by this generation no one knew who the Epstein's were.

Here are four adorable postcards of two children from Connecticut named Sylvia and Sherwin Epstein in 1922. I bought fifty of these old photos from a vendor at the flea market today. They are a wonderful set. The photos are of several families that are related over a fifty year period from 1880 - 1930's. Many are marked with the names and others you can tell who they are by seeing previous photos. I'll be posting many of these over the next few weeks. I hope you enjoy them as much as my daughter and I. It is so fun to see this family evolve from the old country to an American family.

A few more from the 1927 Fashion Service magazine. What a great era this was for style. I think since the 1960's styles have gotten so bland. It is often hard to tell what era it is in a movie. Perhaps the jeans got wider or lower, hair bigger or higher. Collars changed a bit but nothing like in the 1930's. The fabrics, the hats, the cut of the garments are so distinct in the 30's.

Bad News Today

These collages of my dad as a boy were made for a birthday one year.

Their engagement annoucement. I made this collage for their 55th.

He was in love with my mom the first day they met.

I thank you all for your prayers for my dad but he passed yesterday morning. He and my mom had been together for 59 years. We are all doing ok. I guess I am still in shock as it is hard to believe that he is gone. My dad was one of those incredible people who knew a little bit about every subject. He was always learning new things and had an incredible love of books. My dad Iz Ungar was a polymer chemist and even after he retired he worked until he was 79 travelling worldwide consulting. He had over 50 US Patents to his name and 100 international patents.

Thank you all for your words of comfort. It is great to konw there are so many friends out there.

For some time now I have dabbled in making chocolate candies and bake goods and now I have decided to become a Dove Chocolatier to combine my love of chocolate and of course sales. Happy New Year everyone! The Holiday Image Bonus is over and the posts have been deleted. I will post new images and some of the old next Christmas season. In the mean time I am back posting assorted vintage images every Saturday for your enjoyment. In honor of New Year please post a comment with what type of images you would like to see. This week the images are from a November 1911 McCall's magazine. I have chosen a variety of images including advertisements. I adore the styles from this period though the corsets look a little uncomfortable. Sometimes I can't even stand an under wire bra. Imagine a full torso corset. How woman suffer for that perfect figure. I will try to post a few more of these precious images tommorow so check back.

Claims of more then $1,000,000 dollars in 1888, It just goes to show you how much inflation is this last century. I imagine that number is closer to $1 Billion now. I am so lucky to have made lots of great friends at the flea market. My daughter and I scour the aisles at the flea market every weekend for slightly damage vintage images that people are willing to part with for less money. This is how I bring you new images each week. Well, this week I have group of images that are about 120 years old from one of those flea market friends. He knows I post the images here at Clearly Vintage for free and so he sell things to me for very little money. Often he gives me stray pages he can not sell for free.

Todays black & white pictures are from several Harper's Bazar magazines from the 1900's. All of the drawings are by Caroline Love Goodwin. She lived a very interesting life and was the first woman democrat congresswoman from New York. I love her style and the french feel of her drawing.

This week's images are from a book called In Storyland. The inscription in the book is from Christmas 1900. The book is filled with great black and white line drawings and about a dozen beautiful colored plates. The pictures are illustrated by several artists. Well we aren't even half way through the book. Each one of these illustrations is more fun than the next. A few of you have requested digital images for stamping made out of these drawings but I am not sure I know how to do that. So if anyone here has that skill please let me know.
